Civic Center Park is most famously known for its large sled hill as it seems to be featured on local news after every large snowfall. We’ve all seen this sled hill and maybe you don’t really know about it. You might be watching WDIV or Fox2 in the morning after a big snowfall and you see all the school closings. Inevitably they send a reporter to a local sled hill for some live shots of kids sledding on a school’s out snow day. 9 out of 10 times they send the reporters to Civic Center Park Sled Hill because the Madison Heights sledding hill is so popular (and it’s so close to many local TV studios ;).
The Civic Center Park sled hill, while it lacks a lot of amenities, is impressive. It’s very wide across the top to accommodate large groups of sledders. It’s not the biggest sled hill in Oakland County, but it’s enough for big sled hill fun on a snowy day! The sled hill at Civic Center Park is very close to the parking lot. Don’t laugh, if you’ve been to other local Michigan sled hills, you’ll know what I mean when it comes to hiking a great distance with kids lugging sleds. It’s a very convenient place to take the kids sledding.

The Civic Center Park Sled Hill in Madison Heights doesn’t have a warming center but there is close proximity to public bathrooms. The sled hill also doesn’t feature a side walk up section or barriers. If you go on a busy day, it’s basically a free-for-all of kids racing up and down the hill. Make sure you tell your kids to keep their eyes peeled. Sometimes the hill looks like a kamikaze mission with kids pinballing all over the hill. The sled hill itself is worth it is worth it from a sledding standpoint. It’s plenty steep and, like I said, widely accessible for large groups.

Civic Center Park has playscapes located near the main pavilion shelter. The playscapes are fairly modern but nothing to write home about. Basketball courts and sports fields are centrally located. While the scenery is sparse compared to many other Oakland County Parks, they do offer a 1 mile fitness track. Other features include picnic pavilions and sand volleyball.
While Civic Center Park doesn’t offer what some parks offer in terms of nature, you can’t beat the central location of the park and the close proximity to the park’s attractions. Civic Center Park is located conveniently near the Madison Heights Police Station, Public Library, 43rd District Court and city planning building. The Civic Center Park Sledding Hill is the star of the park’s show.
