NOTE – ALL Metro Detroit ice skating rinks listed below are weather dependent (obviously). Make sure you check local rink conditions before venturing out. OCM is not responsible to updates or changes made since this info has been listed. Skate at your own risk, often these rinks are not necessarily supervised. ALSO, due to Covid – some of these rinks may be closed or unkept.

Some Ice Rinks marked in BOLD GREEN host rinks that are maintained and open to skating even when the weather is bad. They either use synthetic ice OR have a professionally cooled surface enabling use no matter what the weather is.

Rink is located at Beverly Park near the tennis courts. Open ice, not structured. Open beginning at 8a, park admission is FREE. Bring your own skates and skate at your own risk. For ice conditions info, you can contact the Village of Beverly Hills at 248-646-6404. Beverly Park also has a very nice sledding hill (toward the back of the park). Beverly Park is is maintained by the Village of Beverly Hills.

Barnum Park Ice Skating Rink (corner of Purdy and Frank streets in Birmingham, MI)
The ice rink at Barnum is non-refrigerated and only open when weather permits. Barnum Park ice-skating is open during daylight hours only. Contact 248-530-1700 or 248-530-1700 for ice-skating conditions. The ice rink may be covered with snow at times, but city crews will “clear it as soon as feasible”. As Crooked Lake freezes over, park staff occasionally keeps it smooth for blades but the ice itself is largely unstructured and not maintained. Bring your own skates, as there are no rentals. Hours – weather-dependent; 8a-one-half-hour before sunset daily. Independence Oaks County Park is operated by Oakland County Parks. Call 248-625-0877.

A small ice rink has been set up by the Clarkston Area Optimist Club at Depot Park in Downtown Clarkston.

Farmington / Farmington Hills Outdoor Ice Skating Rink

Riley Park ice rink is open daily, weather permitting. Hours are daily from 10a-10p. Skating is FREE to the public. Questions and inquiries on ice conditions should be directed to 248-474-5500 or check the Riley Park Ice Rink Facebook Page. The rink does not have skate rental. The Riley Park Rink is maintained by the City of Farmington.

Innovation Hills Rochester Hills Ice Skating Rink
Innovation Hills (2800 W Hamlin Road, Rochester Hills, MI)
Maintained by the City of Rochester Hills. The upper pond is open daily for recreational ice skating (NO ice hockey), from 10a-5:30p, weather permitting. Maximum of 25 skaters at one time. If the skating area reaches capacity, park staff will check in skaters and enforce a 30 minute maximum to allow other patrons usage. Call 248-656-4673.

Madison Hts Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Rosie’s Park

Rosie’s Park features an ice rink maintained by Madison Hts DPS employees. The rink lights go on at dusk so the rink remains open (weather permitting) until 10p 7 days per week. Rosie’s Park ice rink features 2 hockey goals and an open area for open skating. Rosie’s Park is maintained by the City of Madison Heights.

Pack your skates and head for the lake. An outdoor family ice skating rink is located in West Playfield at Lake St. Clair Metropark. The rink, a comfort station, a warming room and picnic tables for resting are conveniently located close to the parking area. For ice and snow conditions, contact Lake St Clair Metropark at 586-463-4581. Park vehicle entry fee is required for admission. Lake St Clair Metropark does not offer ice skate rentals.

Milford Outdoor Ice Skating Rink

Bring out your ice skates and glide onto the small rink at the Orchard Picnic area. It is located next to the picnic shelter with a small walkway mat from the shelter to the rink. Rink is open when ice conditions permit.

Oakland Twp Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Bear Creek Nature Park Ice Rink (740 West Snell, Rochester, Michigan 48306)
Bear Creek Park ice skating rink is located near the park’s parking lot. Ice skating is unsupervised and ice skate rental is not available. Hockey is prohibited at Marsh View Park. Hours are 10a-5p 7 days a week when ice conditions are perfect for skating. For an update on ice skating conditions, call 248-651-4440 ext 289. Bear Creek is maintained by Oakland Twp Parks & Rec.

Oxford Outdoor Ice Skating Rink

Open from dawn to dusk 7 days per week. The ice rink is open weather permitting. This is a large outdoor ice skating rink that features lighting for night skating. Seymour Lake Park is also home to a great sled hill.

Ice fishing and ice skating are permitted on Stony Lake. The Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department does not monitor ice conditions or thickness. Ice fishing and skating is done at own risk. For more info, visit

Municipal Park Ice Skating (400 Sixth St, Rochester, Michigan 48307)
The downtown Rochester ice skating pond at Municipal Park is located at the end of Ludlow street in Downtown Rochester, Michigan. The pond is open for ice skating during the winter as long as the ice conditions are suitable. Park entry is free. Municipal Park does not offer ice skate rentals. The rink is maintained by the City of Rochester.

Rochester Hills Outdoor Ice Skating
Spencer Park / Carter Lake Ice Skating (3701 John R Road, Rochester Hills, Michigan)
Spencer Park in Rochester Hills offers ice skating on their lake. There are two to three separate areas designated for hockey or ice skating. Admission fee to Spencer Park is required to gain entry and the park won’t open in the winter until ice-conditions are suitable for ice skating. Spencer Park also offers a heated shelter with indoor restrooms. Skate rental is available. They host a pond hockey tournament every winter (weather permitting). Call 248-656-4657. Hours – 10a-dusk. Spencer Park is operated by the City of Rochester Hills.

Metro Detroit Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks / Royal Oak Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
The Detroit Zoo (8450 W 10 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI 48067, 248-541-5717)
Open daily during Wild Lights. Located inside the Zoo in front of the penguin center.  A 25-minute skating session is $7 per person ages 4 and older ($3 if you bring your own ice skates). “The Winter Rink is not made of ice, but of a synthetic plastic known as Glice – a material composed of heat-pressed layers of polymers – so no water or electricity is required for operation.” CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Royal Oak Ice Skating Rink
Meininger Park (Maxwell & Farnum, Royal Oak, MI 48067)
Royal Oak DPS creates and maintains the rinks at various parks in Royal Oak. Free to the public and open for family skating (no hockey). This rink is maintained by a DPS employee who volunteers their own time to take care of it. Call 248-246-3180 for ice conditions to make sure it is open for the upcoming season. Maintained by the City of Royal Oak.

Royal Oak Ice Skating Rink / Royal Oak Winter Blast M3 Skating Rink

Royal Oak Winter Blast built an outdoor ice skating rink in the West lot of the Royal Oak Farmers Market that will remain open through March after the winter festival (2/18/22 – 2/20/22) has ended. M3 Skating Rink hours after the festival will be Monday-Thursday 4p-10p, Friday & Saturday 11a-11p, and Sunday 11a-8p. Admission costs after the festival will be as follows: Adults $10, Kids (12 & under) $8, Seniors (59 & older) $8, and Military/First Responders $8.

Wixom Outdoor Skating Rink

Ice skaters are welcome to use the Wixom Civic Center fountain area for ice skating when it freezes for the winter. The rink is only open when ice conditions allow for skating. I’m told you may want to bring a shovel to clear the ice. Ice skating is free. Bring your own skates. No hockey. For more info, call 248-624-4557. The Zehnder Park rink ice surface has its own chiller which enables the rink to be operable even when ice skating conditions are less than perfect. The NEW ice rink is the latest addition to the Frankenmuth Christmas Experience. Open 7 days per week – Mid November through Mid February. Admission is $10. Skate rental is available. Macomb County Skating Rinks

NEW for 2020 – Blake’s is offering a 2000+ sq ft ice skating rink. The rink is synthetic ice and open most weekend and holiday breaks from early December through late March. Hours are 1p-7p Mondays through Fridays, and 11a-7p on Saturdays. 50-minute skating passes are avail to purchase on their website for $10 and they offer skate rentals for $5. The rink is part of Blake’s Winter Wonderland Experience which includes outdoor igloo dining and open-air bar.

Shelby Township Outdoor Ice Skating

Stony Creek Metropark offers a large ice skating area at the boat launch section of the park (near Eastwood Beach). Park hours are from 7a-8p daily. Ice skating rink opens when conditions permit. Stony Creek Metropark does not offer ice skate rentals. Park entry fees are required for ice skating.
