How to Help a Child Sleep Through The Night Tip #1 – White Noise
We’re a sound spa family. My husband and I have owned one since before our children were born. Our sound spa is no big deal, just one of those inexpensive models by HoMedics that we picked up from Kohls or Target years ago. Nowadays, you can just download white noise apps.
We picked up additional sound spas for our children when they were born to help us out more than anything. We figured the background noise would filter out any household noises that would wake up our kids. Plus we read about how getting a sound machine would help simulate the noise in the womb and help newborns. Now, years later, they’re hooked. Our son enjoys the “Rainfall” setting the most and our daughter likes her reliable “White Noise.” I really feel that the sound spas have helped them. When they’re tired they can filter out most background noises on their own and sleep soundly even when the house is noisy.
How to Help a Child Sleep Through The Night Tip #2 – Download New Age Music
Recently, my son who is a little more high-strung than most kids, has had some difficulty sleeping, even experiencing night mares that made it difficult to fall back asleep. I dusted off an old new age CD I used to sleep in college – “Ocean Dreams” by Dean Evenson. The spiritual new age music and tones are set to a backdrop of ocean noises like dolphins and whales communicating. It’s VERY peaceful. I found it funny that there are actual warning labels on the CD saying the music induces alpha waves in the brain designed to provide all-over relaxation and healing. The label even warns you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while you’re listening to it! You can download this type of new age of music and loop it, it works very well on nervous or anxious sleepers. Obviously there are “soundscapes” artists everywhere that use Binaural Beats – try to focus on the ones that are heavy on the Delta Brain waves in their music and soundscapes – they really work!
