Orion Twp Recreation’s Jesse Decker Park is just under 25 acres and is mostly for being a sports destination park – tennis, baseball, softball, football, soccer, pickleball. The Orion Twp sled hill at Decker Park is located on what is the spring / summer / fall baseball field #1 when you enter the park. The Jesse Decker Park sled hill is located down the 3rd base line through the outfield of the baseball field. The sled hill actually serves as the ballpark’s home run area / fans seating area during baseball season. When the snow is fast, you can try to take your sled all the way from the top of the hill to home plate!
Jesse Decker Park Sledding Hill Orion Twp Sled Hill Review
There aren’t a lot of amenities to Jesse Decker Park from a sledding standpoint. No warming areas, the parking is pretty far away from the hill to lug a sled and the parking area could use some snow removal. There isn’t a snow fence (or wasn’t when I went), and there isn’t a designated place for sledders to walk up and down the hill. There aren’t any restroom facilities either, just porta pottys which aren’t ideal when it’s 20 degrees outside.
The hill is plenty wide enough to spread out on so there isn’t a ton of traffic even when there are a lot of sledders. The sled hill is wide to allow for multiple sledders and the speed factor is a hit for sledders over 10 years old. The banks to the side of the large hill serve as smaller hills and are a good option if you have smaller children. I’ve seen plenty of parents use the smaller banks on the side of the hill for their toddlers and smaller children as opposed to the larger, faster hill.
The sled hill is fairly steep and greasy fast in proper conditions. There is also a fairly large dip at the bottom of the steep hill (see video). The dip at the bottom of the hill where the sled hill meets the baseball field outfield will allow sledders to get “plenty of air” and I witnessed quite a few fun wipeouts on this hill. The lack of snow fence or hay bales to guide the kids sledding makes it a kamikaze situation at the bottom of the hill. Not completely unsafe, but you have to keep an eye out for the little kids.
The Jesse Decker Park Sled Hill might not be an ideal “destination sled hill” (like Lost Lake Nature Park) but it’s great for kids in the neighborhood. If I lived closer, it might be my family’s “go to” sledding hill. Sled hill hours are from 8a-sunset weather permitting
