TUNNEL OF TREES PICS

Legs Inn Restaurant Cross Village Pics

The trip to Legs Inn can be taken from the Downtown Harbor Springs area, through the 20-mile plus stretch of the “Tunnel of Trees” with the view of Lake Michigan by your side, and ending the route at the Legs Inn.

Legs Inn was started by Polish immigrant, Stanley Smolak who settled in an area that reminded him of his native land. Smolak observed the artistic beauty in the forests and shores surrounding Lake Michigan. Legs Inn was built using the twisted forms of trees, roots and driftwood collected by Smolak from the surrounding area, along with the stones washed smooth and round by Lake Michigan’s waters.

You will also see these creations in the furniture and fixtures inside Legs Inn. The name, Legs Inn, is derived from the row of inverted cast iron stove legs Stanley used to fashion the decorative railing on the roof of the building.

Legs Inn Restaurant Cross Village is now a 90+ year old family business into its third generation of ownership. Today, you will still have your food prepared by the family in a truly authentic fashion.

We sat at the bar for dinner and enjoyed the company of the bartender who’s directly from Poland! We don’t know much about truly authentic Polish food, but everything tasted spectacular We asked the bartender if the food was authentic and what he thought in comparison to what he grew up with. He wholeheartedly confirmed that everything was authentic and that there were only one or two dishes that he felt his grandma could cook better.

We tried the Zurek Soup, which is a traditional Polish soup. Supposedly there are as many recipes for Zurek, but this is the only one I’ve had and it’s also the best soup I’ve ever had. Legs Inn’s Zurek is a uniquely-flavored recipe that includes Polish Sausage, hard-boiled eggs and red potatoes in a rich meat and rye stock. You could taste the smoky flavor from the sausage, and the broth was incredible.

We also had the Polska Kielbasa, which was smoked to perfection, lean, and served with sauerkraut. Then, we went a little off the board and tried one of their International entrees – the Blackened Whitefish. Again, the best (by far) Whitefish I have ever had. Typically, I always add in some tartar sauce… this one had no need for it.

I can’t wait to go back to Legs Inn Restaurant  – both for the ride and the food. The ride there is more than spectacular, and the food matches up to the scenic views. Try the ride on a motorcycle if you can.
