Maca health benefits for women – Maca, a crushed tan powder from a plant, is touted as women’s health supplement to improve focus, boost libido, and combat fatigue. There have also been claims of Maca helping women with menstrual problems and hormone issues with menopause.
I feel compelled to write about Maca because every single time I’ve mentioned this touted “Incan Superfood” supplement to somebody, they’ve never heard of it. Kind of like when I used to ask around about Apple Cider Vinegar about 15 years ago.
Maca powder is basically from a root plant that is grown at high altitudes in the Peruvian Andes. Maca has been used as a source of nourishment and healing for thousands of years. It is gaining widespread popularity as a supplement for everything from overall health issues to a just a dietary supplement to boost iron levels – and almost every health benefit in between.

- Maca contains flavonoids, which are thought to improve mood and reduce anxiety. A study in 14 postmenopausal women found that maca may reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
- It is possible that maca can help to improve blood pressure. The same 2015 study also found that 3.3g of maca per day for 12 weeks lowered blood pressure in Chinese postmenopausal women.
- Maca might help protect the skin from UV rays. Another animal study in 2011 found that extracts from maca leaves might help prevent the formation of sunburn cells.
- Maca root also promotes natural antioxidants in the body, such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase. Some people believe antioxidants can help prevent some health conditions, including heart disease and cancer.
- Maca can help reduce menopause symptoms. One study found that postmenopausal women who took two daily tablets containing maca experienced reduced symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats.
- Maca can improve learning and memory. A 2014 review of the literature suggested that maca may have benefits for learning and memory performance. Researchers suggested that it could be helpful in treating conditions that affect these processes, such as Alzheimer’s disease. However, only research on animal models is currently available, so it is unclear whether maca will have the same benefits in humans.

After trying the Maca for a short few days, I immediately noticed my ability to focus better. I also felt that my stamina was stronger. And, most importantly, once my cycle hit, I noticed incredible changes. Definitely not perfect, but drastically better. Maca Is A Difficult Supplement to Ingest (comparatively speaking)
Now for the most challenging part for many… it doesn’t taste great, and it doesn’t mix or hide well in anything. The taste reminds me of the taste of the powder inside of Whoppers candies, those chocolate-covered malt balls. Don’t try to stir the Maca into your yogurt. You’ll end up with a lumpy bad tasting mess. Personally, I take a half teaspoon each day. I literally scoop the Maca with a measuring spoon and pour it onto my tongue and wash it down with a thicker beverage like milk. I hurriedly take a bite of toast just in case the Maca powder sticks to any surfaces in my mouth. It’s a pretty fine powder so it tends to do that. The bright side is, no after-taste.
I’ve been taking health supplements for years with tremendous success and Maca is one of those supplements you just don’t enjoy taking or trying to mix into something to make it palatable (The WORST is Apple Cider Vinegar).
The brand I use is Navitas Naturals Maca. You can get it at just about any online retailer, but I use Puritan’s Pride. It was one of the only ones I could find that was gelatinized. Also, it was fairly priced on Amazon, and you can sign up for the auto shipments and save even more.
