Penny Black Rochester Review – Pics, and menu info. Penny Black Grill & Tap is located 4th Street in Downtown Rochester MI in the same building that served as the post office from 1938-1989. The post office was built in 1937, and “Penny Black” was the first pre-paid postage stamp circa 1840, hence how Penny Black restaurant got its name.
Penny Black in Downtown Rochester has a modern interior with a nice atmosphere, dark glossy wood table booths, black ceiling… Refined but still suitable for fun with TV’s, music, a stage for a band, and strings of lights in the bar area. Penny Black is a bit upscale if you’re just expecting regular “bar food”. It reminds me a lot of Johnny Black’s Public House in Rochester Hills… great bar food, fun atmosphere and an adult crowd. You can go anywhere to have a meal, Penny Black is great for when you want to have a drink or two (or more) with your meal.
The menu at Penny Black has a little bit of everything. I went in thinking it was strictly pulled pork sandwiches and BBQ fare. But in actuality, Penny Black is an Irish bar/restaurant that also offers offers many selections such as salmon, nachos, fajitas, BBQ sandwiches, salads, and more. The have a wide-range of premium Angus beef gourmet burgers.
