Wine tastings at Happy Days & Nights are slightly different from the other wineries in the area. I am used to seeing a wine list and selecting 4-5 wines to sample via a flight. Once I find a favorite, I might purchase a glass to enjoy there, or the bottle to take home. At Happy Days & Nights, wine tastings are done differently. You pay a flat rate of ($10 when I visited) and you get unlimited tastings of all their wines, going from dry to sweet. They say they’ve had as many as 10 wines; when I went, there were six. Crooked Vine Winery in nearby Alanson does their tastings similarly, but theirs are not unlimited.
Each year, the wine selection at Happy Days & Nights is different because the crops vary and Happy Days & Nights only uses their own cold-hardy grapes grown on their premises. That’s another difference from some of the other local wineries which sometimes get their grapes/juice off-site. The staff at Happy Days & Nights explained that this is what makes it difficult sometimes to make red wines because those grapes don’t do as well in the up north climate.
So, the six wines I sampled were whites, a rose, and a sherry. I usually prefer red, but I did this wine tasting in the summer so a chilled white was a refreshing option.
When doing a wine tasting at Happy Days & Nights, you are given a wine sheet for note taking and pricing info. Each wine is listed on the sheet and there is a section to make notations/rankings. The nice part is, if you forget how one tasted, or you’re not sure of your notes, they let you try any of them again, unlimited.
Overall, I kind of like the set up for the wine tasting at Happy Days & Nights. After trials of a bunch of different wines, I always think I will remember what was my favorite, or which one had a certain hint that I liked, or which didn’t have super strong tannens, etc. At Happy Days & Nights, I just asked to try the two that I couldn’t recall which I preferred and I easily was able to determine which one I wanted to buy a glass of.
I respect that Happy Days & Nights grows all their own grapes to make their wines, however, I kind of missed trying some red wines, especially when the tastings are unlimited! I would have loved sitting there for a while trying all of them and comparing the semi sweets to the drys, both red and white. Additionally, the selection is smaller and there was really only one wine that I cared enough for to buy a glass. At some of the other wineries, I am torn between 3 or 4 wines that I really liked.
Guests who stay at the Happy Days & Nights bed and breakfast get a complimentary wine tasting.
