Martin Road Park Ferndale neighborhood park and splash pad – review, pics, info, and FREE splash pad info for the Ferndale neighborhood park North of 9 Mile Rd and just East of Hilton Rd. This park is known for being adjacent to the Detroit Curling Club which operates curling courts during the winter months outdoors and curling courts indoors at their indoor arena. The park is operated and maintained by the City of Ferndale.

Martin Rd Park is the largest of all the parks located in Ferndale and often hosts many of Ferndale P&R’s seasonal and holiday events including their annual Ferndale Fall Festival and Ferndale Egg-Stravaganza Easter Egg Hunt. The park is also host to FREE outdoor summer movie nights on select summer evenings.
Martin Road Park Ferndale Sled Hill / Donald Gattes Sled Hill
The park features a large sled hill, Donald Gattes Sled Hill, which is thoughtfully designed. Users can climb the fenced in stairway that leads to the top of the hill from the south side the park and safely sled down west to east down the smooth hill. It’s a nice sled hill, but in no way too fast or treacherous. A perk is that the sled hill is a short walk from the parking lot and another short walk to indoor restrooms. The sled hill is named in memory of Donald Gattes, a longtime Ferndale Department of Public Works employee.
Martin Road Park Splash Pad
Completed in July of 2022, the FREE splash pad features a giant rotating water bucket, several sprayers and splashing features, and zero-depth entry. I’m guessing the size is around 1600 square feet and certainly one of the nicer FREE splash pads in Oakland County. The Ferndale splash pad used filtered, chlorinated water which is recirculated.

The splash pad area is open from 10a-8p 7 days a week summers from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Martin Road Park Playgrounds
The park features 2 playgrounds / playscapes for kids to enjoy. One is a little dated and sits on the outskirts of the park adjascent to large row of about 10 swings. The other connects to the main path of the park and is much newer and wheelchair accessible. Neither of these playgrounds are star attractions when compared to other Oakland County playgrounds, but they’re very nice neighborhood park playgrounds.

Other Martin Road Park Ferndale Features
Besides, the splash pad, sled hill, curling facility, and playgrounds… Martin Road Park has handy indoor restrooms near the splash pad and outdoor “port o johns” near the ballfields. I’m not sure if the restroom facility is open during winter months.
The park also features a very nice baseball / softball diamond complete with bleachers, dugouts, and lighting. The park has other fields for sports. Lastly, the park offers a small 1-goal basketball court but it’s dilapidated and in need of restoration.
