Metroparks Family Campouts 2024 – All the Camping Fun without the Drive Up-North: Family Campouts in Your Metroparks. Metroparks camping locations and dates for the summer of 2024.Camping during the summer can be an amazing experience for the entire family; sitting around the bonfire roasting marshmallows, sleeping under the stars, spending the days unplugged and outside in nature.

But if you’ve never camped before planning a trip for your family can definitely seem like a daunting task from pitching your tent to planning activities for your family to enjoy.

This is why the Metroparks have put together a series of Family Campouts at multiple park locations throughout the summer. Metroparks Family Campouts offer the perfect experience for families new to camping – they have preselected the best spots camping spots, provide the supplies for your bonfire and organize a stacked itinerary to keep the entire family busy and entertained. Plus you’ll be sharing the campsite area with other families camping for the first time as well!

Or if you have some experience with camping already but have always wanted to camp at the Metroparks, the Family Campouts offer a once-in-a-year chance to camp at many of the Metroparks who do not typically allow public camping.  Each campout offers a unique experience – read more below about each scheduled this summer.

Metroparks Family Campouts 2024

Metroparks Family Campouts #1 – Kensington Metropark | June 21 – 23

Enjoy an evening guided wildlife walk, fire-making basics, and family entertainment on Saturday evening, as well as plenty of time to explore the park on your own. Heavner Canoe Rental will offer kayaking and canoe opportunities throughout the day on Saturday (additional fee will be charged, must pre-register, spots are limited). Every person in your camping party will receive vouchers to the Kensington Splash ‘N’ Blast upon check-in for use during your stay to cool off and have some fun! Metroparks Family Campouts #2 – Wolcott Mill Metropark | July 19 – 21

Spend a relaxing weekend on the banks of the Clinton River, or take part in the many activities and events at the nearby Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center and Historic Center. Crafts, games, animal encounters, wagon rides, fishing, and hiking activities will all be available to registered campers, or you can venture out on your own to explore the many miles of hiking trails, or variety of local restaurants, all within a few minutes’ drive. Metroparks Family Campouts #3 – Lake St. Clair Metropark | August 1 – 14

What’s better than a nostalgic night under the stars and next to the water? Come enjoy tent camping on the shores of Lake St. Clair. This special camping experience will only be available for two weeks in August. Camp with us for one night or multiple nights. There is plenty to experience when camping at Lake St. Clair Metropark, enjoy a day at the beach, swim in the pool, splash in the Spray Zone, visit the Nature Center, rent a kayak or do some hiking and biking. Metroparks Family Campouts #4 – Stony Creek Metropark | August 24 – 25

Bring your family for a fun-filled overnight at Stony Creek Campground! Join the Nature Center team for an afternoon of crafting and camping skills. We’ll have drop-in stations set up where you can do sun print crafts, learn to build a better campfire, decorate a hiking stick, and explore wildlife tracks and signs. As the sun sets, take a twilight hike and look and listen for nocturnal animals. New this year –  4 sites will be set up with a tent and 4 cots for campers that don’t have their own camping equipment. Just bring your own bedding and any other items you may want for your night under the stars. More info, register at metroparks.com/camping

Family Campout: Historic Fort Wayne | August 24 – 25

Let’s go camping! In collaboration with Detroit Outdoors, Black to the Land, and the City of Detroit Parks & Recreation department, join us for our family campout at Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit. No experience needed! We will have on-site beginner camping clinics and camping experts to teach campers how to set-up a tent and how to build a campfire. All day long, campers will enjoy community yard games and structured activities like arts & crafts, nature programs, campfire cooking and community fire pit with s’mores. And when you’re not learning with us, campers are able to explore the Historic Fort Wayne grounds and relax with riverfront views. It will be a great time to get your family into camping and make some summer memories. More info, register at metroparks.com/camping

Spots are limited, so it is best to register early! Families will need to bring their own tents and camping equipment for most campout locations.
