Martin Luther King Day Events 2020 Metro Detroit – Metro Detroit, Michigan events and activities honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MLK Day 2020 is Monday, January 20. In addition to the celebrations, I’ve also included some school’s out fun things to do for kids.

Milford Weekend Events – March on Main MLK Event
Prospect Hill Shopping Center
The HVMLK Day Committee will host the annual March on Main Street from Prospect Hill to The SHAC. Line up for the march starts at 12:30p, and the ceremony commences at 1p with a brief presentation and National Anthem performance. Royal Oak Martin Luther King Jr Day Events – MLK Jr Service
Berkley HS (2325 Catalpa, Berkley, MI)
The event kicks off with a light breakfast followed by inspirational performances from students. Participants are encouraged to participate in both on- and off-site service projects. Community-wide celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy a continental breakfast and hear special remarks from guest speakers and city officials. Our theme this year is Operation Cover Me. Afterwards, gather in the gymnasium to make flannel tie blankets for those in need at the Grace Centers of Hope homeless shelter. Learn about the life and legacy of Dr. King and participate in four on-site service projects sponsored by the Troy School District and the City of Troy. These service projects that will have a positive, direct impact on the lives of people right here in Troy and across Metro Deroit as well as our local members of the military serving abroad. Westland Martin Luther King Jr Events – MLK Celebration and Freedom Walk
Westland City Hall (36300 Warren Rd, Westland, MI 48185)
Doors will open at 8a and a shuttle bus will be provided from City Hall to the Westland Public Library where we will begin our Freedom Walk to signify unity at 9a. Drop in to the Print Shop where you’ll ink and print your very own commemorative Martin Luther King Jr. broadside poster, set in vintage wood type from our collection. Families of all ages are invited to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with family programs starting at 11 a.m., including gallery adventures, games and a special drop-in art-making workshop.
Detroit Film Theatre: King: A Filmed Record 1 p.m.
Constructed from a wealth of archival footage, this Oscar®-nominated documentary follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the civil rights movement. Rare footage of King’s speeches, protests and arrests are interspersed with scenes of high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause. Restored to full-length by the Library of Congress, the complete version is a national treasure that gives viewers an appreciation of the personal challenges King endured and the cultural legacy he left behind.
