Metroparks Water Safety Tips – Essential Tips from a Metroparks Lifeguard
In this article experienced lifeguard and Metropark Park Operations Manager, Holly Clegg, will be sharing her essential water safety tips.
- Never leave a child unattended and avoid distractions – Accidents can happen in a blink of an eye. Never leave children unattended around the pool, a lake or other body of water, even for a moment. Take family photos and a few videos but then put your phone away to enjoy the experience and stay focused. Even if lifeguards are present, you (or another responsible adult) should always stay with your children.
- Learn to swim and teach your child to how to swim – It’s important to observe your swimming limitations and capabilities. Don’t know how to swim? It’s never too late to learn and each season the Metroparks work with community partners to offer free swim lessons for adults.
- Don’t just pack it, wear your jacket – The American Red Cross emphasizes that life jackets should be worn by everyone in or around water, especially when boating, water skiing, or doing other water activities. They also highlight the importance of wearing a properly fitted, US Coast Guard-approved life jacket for your weight and size. SOURCE
- Teach your kids the “rules of the pool” and always survey the area for potential hazards – First rule of the pool – teach your children to ask permission to go near water. Different bodies of water post different risks from currents, temperature, shallow or unclear water and underwater hazards. Whether going to the pool or the lake, it’s always important to check out the resources around you if an emergency were to occur. Other ways to be prepared if an emergency should occur know the signs of drowning, know how to call for help, familiarize yourself with rescue equipment and how to safely assist a drowning person and consider taking a class to learn CPR.
- Stay hydrated – Swimming and sun equal FUN, but it is important to take frequent breaks, at least once per hour to drink fluids, use the restroom and reapply sunscreen.
- Use sunscreen and reapply often – Even on cloudy days, the sun’s UV rays can still cause burns or sunstroke. Hats, sunglasses and other sun-protective clothing are greats ways to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays.
