Back to School – How the Metroparks Provide Learning Opportunities in School, at the Parks, and at Home

Metroparks Homeschool Programs

Homeschool isn’t just for home. Not when you can take your lessons out to the Metroparks. It’s the best place to learn about science, nature, the environment … and more. At the Interpretive Centers, homeschool groups are welcome to register for any of the topics covered in the Metroparks’ educational program guide. They can also customize programs for your specific needs; just talk to the Interpretive staff to work with your group on scheduling a program.

If you’re looking to sign just your children up for a program, the Metroparks also have monthly Homeschool programs for various ages and at multiple locations.

Homeschool Series at Stony Creek Metropark (Ages 6-12) – Dive into hands-on, seasonal science exploration with Stony Creek Nature Center’s Homeschool Series. Each session will focus on a different topic, providing opportunities for indoor and outdoor discovery of the natural world. Come ready to be active in the outdoors and bring your curiosity about nature, too! Register for one date or all! Registration Link

Let’s Go Outside Pre-K at Stony Creek Metropark (Ages 3-5) – You and your little ones are invited every third Monday of the month to participate in an outdoor nature adventure! Every month staff will encourage exploration by using our senses, tools, and curiosity to make discoveries as the seasons go by. The program will focus on comparing the changes that happen outside each month and, of course, make sure to leave time for creativity and play along the way. Registration Link

Preschool Nature Explorers at Indian Springs Metropark (Ages 3-6) – Let’s explore together! Preschool Nature Explorers is a monthly nature program for preschool-aged children (accompanied by an adult). The first Thursday of each month children will learn about a different nature topic through stories, outdoor exploration, and activities or crafts. Registration Link

Advanced Homeschool Explorations at Indian Springs Metropark (Ages 11-16) – Advanced Homeschool Explorations is a monthly program geared towards higher education level homeschool children ages 11 – 16 years old. Every month, the children will embark on a captivating journey through a hands-on laboratory experiment, delving into engaging seasonal science topics and concepts. They will actively participate in data collection, conduct tests to validate hypotheses and hone their observational skills. Registration Link

Homeschool Nature Club at Indian Springs Metropark (Ages 8-12) – Homeschool Nature Club is a monthly drop off program geared towards homeschool children ages 8-12 years old. Metroparks Homeschool Programs / School Programs and Field Trips

Are you a schoolteacher, daycare teacher or other educational leader? Did you know that the Metroparks offer field trips at their Interpretive centers, and they also can bring the field trip to you with their in-school programming opportunities?

The Metroparks field trips and in-school programming covers a variety of topics including wildlife, natural science, environment, ecology, climate, farm life, regional history. And that’s just to start. Most Metroparks programs support the Common Core Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Math (STREAM) and Michigan Science Standards curriculum in content, methodology and technology use.

For teachers in under-resourced communities, the Get Out and Learn initiative offers FREE field trips and in-school programs. Qualifying teachers can receive a scholarship for their class that will cover all program fees for either an in-person field trip at a Metropark or an outreach program hosted at their school and will reimburse the cost of transportation (up to $500) to and from a Metropark for in-person field trips. To learn more and see if your school qualifies, visit the Metroparks website.
