Sunday, December 24, 2017 (Christmas Eve) – Oakland County Parks and Recreation celebrates Guest Appreciation Day by offering free daily park entry on December 24. Experience natural areas, trails and all park amenities at Addison Oaks, Highland Oaks, Independence Oaks, Lyon Oaks, Orion Oaks and Rose Oaks county parks. Visitors can enjoy free daily park entry with access to natural areas, trails, dog parks and all park amenities. Park hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, or as posted at the park. For more info, call 1-888-OCParks

Become a nature detective and examine tracks, scat and other animal clues to tell that animal’s story. Make your very own investigator guide to take home for future animal mysteries. Then don snowshoes and head outdoors for a wintry walk to discover which animals have been active this season. Snowshoesare provided. Participants must wear boots. A winter walk will be substituted if there is not sufficient snow. Appropriate for ages 5 and older. $5/person. Pre-registration with payment required. Indoors, learn about the history of snowshoes and then head outdoors for an afternoon of winter fun including a guided snowshoe hike, a crackling campfire and snack. Snowshoes are provided. This kids-only event gives parents the afternoon off. Kids will spend the afternoon learning about winter wonders as they play games, do a craft and have a winter-themed snack. During a snowshoe hike, discover which animals have been out and about this winter. Snowshoes are provided. Participants must wear boots. As winter winds whip snow across fields, journey back 20,000 years to discover Michigan’s glacial past. A goo-filled demonstration will show how glaciers flow, a process which slowly sculpted our state and our own Crooked Lake at Independence Oaks. Michigan’s state stone is the Petoskey stone, a fossil colonial coral. Using different sandpaper grits and some “elbow grease,” participants will choose and polish their own stone to take home, while learning about local fossils and minerals.
