These Gluten Free products are the best I've found

Sunday, 07 February 2010 00:00 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

After years of searching, sampling, cooking, tasting, dumping and trial and error, I've finally narrowed down my favorite gluten free products for specific foods. This stuff is expensive, so once you find something you like, you tend to marry it.

Raising a child on the autistic spectrum - my story part II

Sunday, 07 February 2010 17:38 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

It was becoming clear to me that after Jayson's 2nd birthday that I was going to have to do something. We took him to his 2 year appointment at our pediatrician who suggested we take him to a local specialist. I won't name the group that performed the tests. I'll just say that it was a widely-respected hospital group in Michigan. Months and several tests later, we finally were able to sit down with an expert to see what the 4 specialists that observed Jayson and looked at his tests had to say. I'm not sure what I was "expecting" to hear. I was hoping for something definitive along with a course of action. I didn't get it. I was told that 3 of the doctors diagnosed Jayson as "probable" Asberger's Syndrome and 1 doctor diagnosed him as Autistic. The three that were leaning towards Asberger's told me to come back when Jayson reached age 6 or 7 when they could better diagnose him.

Jason Hanson makes appearance for Haiti fundraiser

Friday, 05 February 2010 17:59 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Today, the Achatz pie company held a fundraiser with the Salvation Army to raise money for Haiti. The Achatz family wanted to help the victims in Haiti and they've worked frequently with The Salvation Army so this was a great opportunity to team up again. The Achatz family are also huge Lions fans so they hooked up with them as well to put together a successful event. Customers could get an autograph, as well receive a free slice of pie or a hot bowl of soup to-go with a donation of $10 or more.

Achatz Pie Company has been in business for 17 years. They started the business in their home and began expanding soon after. They now have six locations. They also purchased an orchard in Armada to grow the fresh ingredients they would use in their pies.

I stopped by the Sterling Heights location to see the event and chat with the staff at Achatz, and also to visit their special guest, Jason Hanson of the Lions.

School then vs. School now

Friday, 05 February 2010 12:31 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

When my generation was in elementary school we used to hear tales of woe from our parents and teachers. We'd be slack jawed as we heard about nuns with agendas (and sharp rulers), rampant paddling and strict dress codes. Now we pass the torch (and some of the now funny horror stories) to our kids. I've talked to a lot of friends and relatives lately and decided to compile my favorite stories so far. Here's part 1:

My sister was in second grade. That puts us back at about 1976. Because that's in our lifetime, I tend to think that's really not that long ago. Anyway, she was seated with her four classmates in their group of desks and was talking with the others instead of working. A crime? No. But the teacher wasn’t having it. The teacher, without warning, singled her out and decided to punish her for talking by taping her mouth shut with masking tape and making her work like that for a while. Ah yes, a childhood memory she will never forget.
