Question of the Month

Produce Storage
Produce will benefit from proper storage, remaining fresh two to three times longer than with improper storage.
- Tropical fruits suffer in refrigerated temperatures.
- Do not refrigerate bananas and tomatoes.
- Refrigerate peaches and nectarines only after they've ripened.
- Cucumbers, eggplants and peppers can be refrigerated for one to three days if they are used soon after removal from the fridge.
- Apples and bananas both produce a gas that promotes ripening; store them apart from other fruits.
- Most fruits and vegetables prefer an environment high in humidity.
- Leave any plastic storage bags open or punch holes in them.
- Mushrooms detest too much moisture and will not do well in a plastic bag, but will keep well up to a week if refrigerated in a closed paper bag.
Praise children for their efforts, vs. the end result
When I first read this, I thought, "I think I do that." But then I watched myself more closely and found that I am guilty of too much praise focused on the end result. It's difficult to stop because I get so excited by their accomplishments. Praising children is a way of boosting our children's self esteem, but too much praise can become meaningless. Reinforcing the effort put into a project instead of a good outcome can help children learn the importance of working to achieve their goals.
Last Chance for Late Nite Thursdays
During the summer, Downtown Rochester merchants have been taking advantage of the warm weather and the daylight on Late Nite Thursdays! The last Late Nite Thursday is August 28 from 6pm-9pm. Shoppers will have the opportunity to do their shopping “al fresco,” as many merchants will be open until 9:00 pm or later. In addition to the great shopping and dining, there will be weekly street entertainment and a chance to participate in the “Summer in the City” contest for $2,500 in Downtown Rochester prizes!
